酌奇而不失其贞

酌取新奇的事物和文辞，而不偏离或失去正道。“奇”与“正”相对，指新变；“贞”同“正”，指正常的事理或正确的道理。这是写文章、做学问必须坚持守正创新的基本原则。“贞”在这里还有正直、坚定的意思。它强调世间一切普遍规律、客观知识、普适性思想观念、普遍认同的共通情感和美好事物等必须坚持，一切优秀的文学创作经验或良好范式也应该传承，这样才能保证思想文化的发展、文学艺术的演进及文章的写作不会偏离正道，并在前贤和优秀经典基础上不断提高。
